Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Peer Support Specialist III (Retired Law Enforcements Officer) in the Cop2Cop Call Center for Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.

The Peer Support Specialist III works under the supervision of the call center’s team of Mental Health and Peer Support Specialists providing person centered, culturally competent, and “consumer friendly” services to individuals who contact the Call Center. Receives telephone, chat, and text requests for service, undertakes review of the service need of the caller or consumer, and responds by offering peer support and appropriate referrals and disposition.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Provides “customer friendly” services, taking initiative in engaging individuals served in an empathic and concerned manner.
  • Responds to referrals, inquiries, and other contacts with professionals, outside agencies, and other parties in a professional and cordial manner.
  • Provides direct care services consistent with philosophy of UBHC.
  • Demonstrates awareness that the CASE model is the tool used by UBHC to assess suicide risk.
  • Demonstrates ability to recognize and identify risk factors for suicide.
  • Promotes the physical health of the individual served.
  • Reviews service requests/referrals for all populations, and responds in accordance with prescribed departmental procedures.
  • Documents contacts, interventions, and interactions with callers in a timely manner and in accordance with established policies.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement

Rutgers University requires all new employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the employee a medical or religious exemption. Minimum Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • At least three (3) years of lived experience in law enforcement.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • For the Cop2Cop program and the RPO program, you must be a retired law enforcement officer who has not had any sustained Internal Affairs offenses in conflict with the Cop2Cop mission.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a computer to record services and other basic office functions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

Retired or Off-Duty Security Officer – (Part Time)
